What is Change Management?

delegates give feedback on change management courseChange Management is all of the actions taken to structure how we move from one state of being to another. These actions involve a wide range of interpersonal skills such as communication skills, influencing and persuading skills. In addition, a competent Change Manager has to possess the ability to break the change into all of the activities that need to happen, and prioritise and resource them.

Change Management is not the same as project management. Project management is a process by which a deliverable (something new or updated) is created and making sure the new product is delivered on time, on budget and to the right level of quality. Change Management is about using interpersonal skills to persuade others to use what has been created, and embedding the use of the deliverable into the way people work. There are many examples of fantastic products that are not used just because no-one thought to explain the value of it to the end user.

Is it really that important?

  • Unlike highly technical project management skills as embodied by PRINCE2, PMP and APMP, Change Management can be undertaken by anyone
  • All members of the project team and user group are involved in change. This includes Team Leaders, Executives, Business Analysts and most importantly end-users and so the more they are aware of the concept of change the better for the ultimate project outcome
  • Change is not an activity confined to one or two specialists– all stakeholders have a vested interest in making the change successful and contribution from the most junior member of the team can be as valuable as that of the team leader if the right change environment is created
  • Change takes place all of the time but as humans, there is only so much change we can take on board at any one time before going into auto-pilot. As such, structuring the change to ensure that the right changes happen without overloading your stakeholder group needs skill and understanding

Benefits of Change Management

  • It clarifies and assigns roles and responsibilities of all those involved in the change effort. This ensures that those with the most relevant skills and experience get to contribute in a structured way.
  • Using Change Management will reduce the number of ‘failed’ change project and the ensuing waste of resources involved in making changes that ‘run out of steam’ or get overtaken by other events which had not been predicted when the change was conceived.
  • Reduce the level of duplicated activity and control processes that run at cross purposes to other changes being made elsewhere in the organisation.
  • Faster implementation of change as all stakeholders know where to get started, what is involved, how long it should take and what the ultimate objective is. This allows them to estimate with greater certainty the impact on their workloads and the level of impact in their departments.

Is a qualification important?

  • Change Management jobs are increasingly popular and separate from project management. Employers recognise the distinct skill set, with those able to ‘do their job’ and at the same time ‘improve their job’ being paid a premium
  • Without a qualification your ability to manage change is very hard to demonstrate or prove. You can reshape your CV but nothing states louder your commitment to your job than having a qualification in your specialised field.
  • The Change Management Foundation & Practitioner qualification is the only stand-alone short course for professionals in change management. Accessing longer duration courses is possible through post-graduate qualifications or trade bodies, this course is unique in its provision of a Foundation and a Practitioner qualification within only five days.
